It’s pretty common for people you match with on dating apps to suggest moving your conversation to messaging apps like Telegram or WhatsApp.
And there’s nothing wrong with it because apps like Telegram do have some great features.
But there are a ton of scammers and creeps that ask you to message there too.
In this post, I’ll explain if Telegram is used for dating and features it offers for dating.
I’ll also go over why scammers would want you to switch to Telegram and the advantages they get. Plus, I’ll also give you some red flags to watch out for, so avoid these scammers.
Is Telegram Used For Dating?
Telegram can be used for dating, but is not a dating app – it’s a messaging app.
Unlike Tinder or Bumble, Telegram doesn’t have any features for finding new partners.
However, it has features like secure messaging, voice notes, and file sharing that can be great for couples to communicate and keep things interesting.

Features That Make Telegram Great For Dating
Telegram might not be your typical dating app, but it has some cool features that can be awesome for couples already together.

Here’s why:
Privacy, Encryption And Security
One of the biggest advantages of using Telegram for dating is the level of privacy and security it offers.
The app has super strong encryption to keep your conversations safe from prying eyes.
This can be really important when you’re sharing personal stuff or sensitive information or images with your partner.
Chat Features
Telegram has some cool chat features that can come in handy.
You can send voice messages, images and videos! You can also call them or video call them. You can also customize your chat backgrounds, add bio info to your profile, and even set online/offline status.
Little things like this can make your conversations feel more personal.

Self-Destructing Messages
Telegram also supports self-destructing messages.
You can set messages to automatically delete after a certain period of time. This can be useful if you want to keep your dating chats super discreet and prevent them from sticking around.
File Sharing
Need to share super long videos or files with that special someone?
Telegram makes it super easy to send all kinds of files, even really large ones up to 2GB!
Stickers And Emojis
Who doesn’t love using cute stickers and emojis when chatting?
Telegram has tons of sticker packs and emoji to liven up your flirty exchanges. It adds some playfulness and lets your personality shine through more than plain text.
People Nearby 2.0
This recent update lets you see other Telegram users in your area who have opted in to being visible. This can be used to discover people nearby and strike up a conversation, and even find love!

Why Scammers Want You to Switch to Telegram
Dating apps have systems in place to detect and ban accounts that are suspicious or trying to scam people. They do this by looking at the language and scripts used in conversations.
However, these dating apps have no way to see what’s being said on separate messaging apps like Telegram or WhatsApp.
This means scammers can operate on those apps without worrying about getting caught.
The Advantages
Scammers gain several advantages by getting people to switch to Telegram.
First, they can easily unmatch on the dating app, which means they can cut off contact and prevent you from reporting their suspicious behavior.
Telegram has features that allow messages to self-destruct or disappear.
So scammers can cover their tracks and get rid of any evidence.
It’s also harder for scammers to get banned from Telegram compared to dating apps, because it doesn’t have the same kind of security and user protection measures in place.

Plus, the metadata of photos and videos shared on Telegram can sometimes reveal information about where the user is located.
Scammers can use this to their advantage.
Red Flags To Watch Out For
While not every request to switch to Telegram is a scam, there are some red flags to look out for.
If the person you matched with has a very vague profile or doesn’t provide many details about themselves, that could be a sign that they’re a scammer trying to hide their real identity.

If they ask you to switch apps really quickly, before you’ve had a chance to have a real conversation, that will NEVER turn out good.
And if they refuse to do voice or video calls, that’s another potential warning sign.
Finally, if the person starts trying to talk about cryptocurrency investments or sends inappropriate content, that’s a clear signal that their intentions are likely not good.
Wrapping Up
To stay safe from potential scams, it’s best to stick to the dating app messaging until you get to know the person more or meet them in real life.
Don’t share your phone number right away either.
You don’t want your personal information getting into the wrong hands.
Oh and many dating apps also allow you to do a reverse image search on profile pictures, which can help you identify if someone is using fake photos (catfishing).
